BoM releases season's first cyclone warning

The season's first potential tropical cyclone is developing in the Arafura Sea and by late tonight is expected
to develop into a Category 1 cyclone that might later make landfall in the Wyndham-Prince Regent River area.

08-09 Cyclone Season Forecasts released

Recently released Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecasts predict that the coming season will produce an 'above normal' level of cyclone and flooding activity in the Coral Sea, North-West Shelf and Northern regions of Australia. BoM warns of the likelihood of at least 2 coastal impacts in each region, with significant risk of at least one severe tropical cyclone coastal crossing during the season.

Poustie wins NIBA's top Young Broker Award

Western Australian senior account manager Ian Poustie has won the 2008 Warren Tickle Memorial Award at the 26th Annual NIBA Convention in Darwin.
Mr Poustie, 31, from Zenith Insurance Services in Osbourne Park, was presented the award by Anthony Day from award sponsor Vero, along with a cheque for $5000.

With the World Federation of Insurance Intermediaries (WFII) we have this single voice. There is certainly a push among the regulators internationally, assisted by the International Society of Securities Commissions, to have relatively uniform legislation. And as we've seen from recent reports the new Federal Government has commenced discussions in the United States regarding mutual recognition in the finance sector.

I'm often asked if the internet has impacted on insurance-buying. I may be wrong, but in commercial cover I don't think it has. However, there's little doubt that the power of e-commerce is unstoppable and competition from the likes of direct insurers, banks and other finance providers - and possibly other professions - will always be hovering somewhere in the future competitive mix.

Big Win On FSL Issue In Victoria

The Brumby Labor Government has accepted in principle the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission's recommendation to replace the Fire Services Levy with a progressive property-based levy and introduce concessions for low-income earners. Treasurer John Lenders said the Fire Services Levy was already under review by the Brumby Labor Government and he would use the existing review process to determine the best model for the new levy. "The Brumby Labor Government is taking the tough decisions and doing the hard work to keep Victoria fire ready and safe," Mr Lenders said.
