Volunteer WeekBrokers Recognise Efforts of VolunteersThe National Insurance Brokers Association (NIBA) recognises the incredible work that volunteers perform throughout the community and supports recognition of their efforts during National Volunteer Week, 10-16 May. NIBA CEO, Noel Pettersen, said many brokers worked closely with volunteer organisations to advise them on risk management and insurance cover. “It is very important that volunteers are protected by insurance while doing their very important work. These groups often have small budgets and a good deed could turn into a nightmare for a volunteer organisation if it leads to one of their workers being injured, to a personal injury case against the organisation, or to their premises being damaged. “It is essential that they have appropriate public liability and personal injury cover, as well as insurance for buildings, contents and motor vehicles. “Because of the nature of these organisations, personnel such as chairs of committees often change and corporate memory is lost. That is why brokers can help in ensuring there is continuity of advice about insurance needs. “Volunteers make such an important o contribution to our community, we should all take the time to recognise their efforts during National Volunteer Week,” Mr Pettersen said. Brokers play a major role in insurance distribution, handling $10 billion in premiums annually and placing around half of Australia’s total insurance business.
