What has been your career pathway in broking up to this point?
I’ve been working as a broker within AEI Transport since 2008. I spent the first three to four years working alongside one of our experienced account managers, learning about insurance policies, policy types/structures and claims management. I’m now managing my own portfolio of clients for the third consecutive year.
Education and ongoing training has been a significant influence in achieving my career goals and I have also been fortunate to work with a great management team within my organisation. I believe good mentoring has played a large part in helping me achieve my professional goals throughout my career to date.
What are your professional ambitions?
I have a lot of goals that I set myself. In short, my main professional ambition is to manage my own insurance broking business and set my goals to align with continued progression.
What areas of broking do you specialise in?
Transport, logistics, warehousing and corporate risks. My current role includes the portfolio design and management for a range of clientele, from small business owners to larger corporate risks.
Why is broker education important to you personally?
I have always been a believer in ongoing education. When I first entered the broking profession, I was completing my Bachelor of Business from Macquarie University. Upon completion of my degree, I immediately commenced my Tier 1 of Financial Services (Insurance Broking), followed by the diploma. Six years later, I’m currently undertaking my Advanced Diploma.
While tertiary education is great, the NIBA courses I have engaged in have allowed me to delve further in areas of insurance that I knew little or nothing about. With many aspects and functions within a broking firm, it’s important to gain a whole perspective on the roles that people play. You can then assess what skill sets you should acquire through broker education based your personal goals and ambition.
What doors has the QPIB designation opened for you in your career?
The QPIB designation has created a lot of value in my work and skill set. Obviously to obtain QPIB status you need to satisfy the criteria set out by NIBA, such as a minimum four years’ broking experience, completion of your Diploma of Insurance Broking and ongoing education requirements.
The QPIB allows you to consistently network while engaging in ongoing education as well as demonstrate to your peers that you are constantly striving to learn more about the broking profession.
How do you use the QPIB designation to market your expertise to clients, if at all?
Clients do appreciate the status of a QPIB broker. In many cases, when we do conduct a broking tender to obtain the services for a client, we heavily promote the fact that all Account Managers within our business are QPIB recognised. We outline the minimum requirements to maintain this status with NIBA and why we want our business to be aligned with a strong focus on ongoing education for the benefit of staffs and clients.
Why would you recommend new entrants to broking seek to attain QPIB as soon as they can?
Simply because it sets you apart from the rest! You become recognised within the industry as a broker who takes pride in their work, is proactive in progressing their career and also provides great service to clients through a sound knowledge base.
I also encourage young professionals in our industry to obtain the QPIB status because it also lifts our image to the general public. Many people criticise our profession because of the lack of training or ongoing education. The QPIB designation proves that this is not the case.
What do you enjoy most about a career in insurance broking?
The most enjoyable part of my job would definitely be the client and insurer interaction. I would never consider myself to be someone who enjoys spending my entire time in the office and I thoroughly enjoy meeting new people, attending sites to visit clients and see their business operation.
