CPD for Members

Careers and Development CPD CPD For Members

All individual NIBA members are required to complete a minimum of 25 CPD points each year, ending on 30 October. CPD points can be earned through a variety of accredited activities, including seminars, industry expos, conventions, and the annual NIBA Convention.

Earning CPD Points

Structured CPD

Members must complete at least 17.5 structured CPD points annually. Structured activities include:

Courses with formal assessments, such as Certificate II/III, Diplomas, Degrees, Graduate Certificates, or Master’s Degrees.

  • Up to 10 points per module
  • Maximum 20 points per 12-month period
Includes short courses, eLearning, and other programs that meet CPD criteria and include measurable learning outcomes.
  • 1 point per hour
  • 3 points for a half-day (up to 4 hours)
  • 6 points for a full day (up to 8 hours)
  • 10 points for two days
  • 12 points for three days

Includes lectures, seminars, workshops, industry discussion groups, distance education with assessments, and internal training.

  • 0.5 point per 30 minutes
  • 1 point per hour
  • 3 points for a half-day
  • 6 points for a full day

Includes serving as a representative on a NIBA committee and contributing to NIBA policy development. Routine administrative tasks are not eligible.

  • 3 points per committee

Unstructured CPD

Members may claim up to 7.5 unstructured CPD points annually through:

Includes reading professional journals such as Insurance Adviser Magazine or other relevant publications. No accreditation is required.

Personal or professional research on unfamiliar topics may be eligible. To claim points:

  • The research must be substantive and presented (e.g. to colleagues or a supervisor)
  • Accreditation is assessed on a case-by-case basis
  • These activities are not listed on the NIBA CPD Register

CPD Exemptions

Members who work part-time (fewer than 3 days per week) or have temporarily left the industry may qualify for pro-rata CPD requirements. Contact info@niba.com.au for guidance.

Activities Not Eligible for CPD

The following do not qualify for CPD points:

  • Networking events
  • Business strategy, planning or marketing meetings
  • Staff inductions or internal system training
  • Motivational sessions
  • First aid or non-relevant RTO training
  • Company updates
  • Informal retelling of attended sessions

NIBA members and teams can use the My CPD tool, simply login with your work email address, register if you haven't already and manage your CPD points directly in your secure portal.

Yes. These are nationally accredited courses. You may claim 10 points per module, up to 20 points per year.

No. Proof of CPD completion with your name and date is sufficient.

  • If the course was run by NIBA: Email info@niba.com.au with the course name.
  • If it was an external course: Contact the provider directly.

Yes, visit the NIBA CPD Register to view accredited programs. Note: Not all accredited courses are listed, as some providers opt out of being publicly displayed.

No. Part-time members working less than three days per week only need 13 CPD points per year.

Yes. Please email info@niba.com.au with your circumstances to apply for a special exemption.
Yes. CPD points can be carried over within a two-year period. For example, earning 35 points in year one means you only need 15 in year two.
No. Events such as networking sessions or luncheons may not be CPD-accredited. NIBA applies the same assessment process to our own events as we do for others.

Yes! Committee members can claim 3 CPD points per committee.
