Target Audience

This workshop is designed for early-career insurance professionals with 0–6 years’ experience in broking, including those working in claims, client management, or placement roles, as well as individuals looking to transition into a broking position.

Whether you are just starting out or building on a few years of experience, this session will provide a practical, end-to-end understanding of the broking lifecycle and how brokers create value for clients, insurers, and other stakeholders.

Overview

The NIBA Broker 101 Workshop is an interactive, foundational program that follows the full broking journey, from underwriting through to placement and claims. Attendees will gain practical insights into best practice at each stage, helping to build confidence and capability in their day-to-day roles.

The workshop is structured into three core segments:

Insurer Segment
This segment provides insight into the insurer perspective, focusing on what makes a high-quality submission, how the underwriting process works in practice, and how market conditions influence underwriting decisions and negotiations. Participants will develop a clearer understanding of how brokers can position risks effectively and build strong insurer relationships.

Broking Segment
Focusing on the broker–client relationship, this segment explores how to understand a client’s risk profile, deliver proactive service, and manage expectations. It outlines best-practice broking techniques from gathering information and structuring programs, to communicating options and recommendations in a clear, client-focused way.

Claims Segment

This segment provides an insurer’s perspective on the claims lifecycle and how brokers can work more effectively with claims teams to support their clients. The presenter will step through how claims are assessed and managed, highlight common issues that can impact outcomes, and outline what “good” looks like in terms of documentation, communication, and advocacy.

Throughout the workshop, participants will engage with real-world examples, practical tips, and facilitated discussions designed to connect technical knowledge with everyday broking scenarios. In addition, our event partner will provide an update on premium funding, including how to position it as a strategic, value-added service, the key benefits for brokers and clients, and practical ways to increase adoption of this flexible, pay-by-the-month solution.
