Who we are

NIBA is the peak representative body for the general intermediated insurance market. It serves as the collective voice of 380+ member firms and 14,000 individual brokers and authorised representatives.

Our membership encompasses a diverse range of entities, including large multinational insurance brokers, Australian broker networks, and small and medium-sized businesses located in cities and regional areas around Australia.

NIBA advocates for the interests of general insurance brokers and their clients, ensuring that the general industry operates with integrity and professionalism.

NIBA sets out to develop and promote high standards of professional practice for insurance brokers in Australia through:

  • industry relevant education and continuing professional development;
  • a membership that subscribes to the Insurance Brokers Code of Practice; and
  • a framework for high standards of ethical and professional conduct by Members.

NIBA has an engaged community. Through various events and initiatives throughoutthe year, NIBA aims to:

  • provide Members with opportunities to meet, share, learn, grow and prosper;

Creation of IBCA – Insurance Brokers Council of Australia as a joint advocacy platform for IBA, CIBA, and LIBRA.

1980

LIBRA and CIBA officially merge to form CIBAust.

October 26, 1982

At the IBA Convention in Melbourne, announced the merger of IBA and CIBAust to form the National Insurance Brokers Association (NIBA).

First NIBA Convention

The very first NIBA Convention at the Chevron Paradise Hotel in Surfers Paradise, October 1983. The theme of the conference was “Harder markets product better brokers”.

NIBA played a key role in developing the Insurance Brokers Act 1984, establishing trust accounts, a formal Code of Conduct, and client-premium safeguards.

Modernisation of the NIBA brand

Working with the Broking Community, NIBA launched it’s new look on 6 August 2025, bringing together over 40 years of being the voice of the broker sector and continue supporting the Brokering Profession in the years to come. On 18 November, the new NIBA website launched, innovating the online presence for the broking profession.
