NIBA Welcomes New Opposition Leadership and Shadow Ministry

Media Release

The National Insurance Brokers Association (NIBA) has welcomed the election of the Hon Angus Taylor MP as Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Liberal Party, Senator the Hon Jane Hume as Deputy Leader, and the announcement of the new Shadow Ministry.

NIBA CEO Richard Klipin said the association looks forward to engaging with Mr Taylor and Senator Hume, and welcomes the continuity of Pat Conaghan MP as Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Financial Services. NIBA also welcomes the Hon Tim Wilson MP as the new Shadow Treasurer.

“Mr Taylor has identified the cost of living and affordability as key priorities for the Coalition, issues that resonate strongly with the insurance broking profession and the communities we serve,” said NIBA CEO Richard Klipin.

“We also welcome the retention of Mr Conaghan in the financial services portfolio. NIBA has established a constructive working relationship with Mr Conaghan and looks forward to continuing it under the new Shadow Ministry.”

Insurance brokers play a vital role in ensuring that all Australians have access to quality risk advice and appropriate cover. With the affordability and accessibility of insurance among the most pressing concerns for households and businesses across the country, NIBA is committed to working with all sides of government to deliver meaningful outcomes for consumers.

Mr Klipin said NIBA is focused on continuing to advocate for coordinated action on the impact of insurance-based taxes and levies, which remain a significant barrier to the affordability and accessibility of essential insurance cover.

“The new Opposition leadership has spoken clearly about reducing the tax and regulatory burden on Australian families and businesses, and we see strong alignment with NIBAʼs longstanding advocacy on insurance taxes and levies,” he said.

NIBA will also continue to engage with the Opposition on the critical importance of investment in disaster mitigation and climate resilience, to help protect communities and support long-term insurability across the country.

NIBA also acknowledges the contributions of the Hon Sussan Ley MP during her time as Leader of the Opposition and of Ted OʼBrien MP as Deputy Leader. “We thank Ms Ley and Mr OʼBrien for their service in those roles and wish them well in their future endeavours,” Mr Klipin said.

NIBA remains committed to working collaboratively with all sides of government to ensure a well-functioning, accessible and competitive insurance market, underpinned by professional advice, that delivers value for consumers and supports national resilience.
