ARPC Cyclone Pool Hits $1 Billion in Claim Payments

News Insurance

The Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC) has reached a landmark milestone, with total claim payments from the cyclone reinsurance pool surpassing $1 billion since the scheme's inception.

Since launching, the pool has responded to 20 declared cyclone events, providing financial support to residential, SME and strata policyholders across northern Australia. A substantial share of those payments are tied to Tropical Cyclone Alfred, underscoring just how significant that event was in terms of scale, severity and the breadth of damage it inflicted on affected communities.

ARPC CEO Dr Christopher Wallace welcomed the milestone as proof that the scheme is delivering on its core purpose.

"Passing $1 billion in claim payments is a significant achievement for the scheme, and more importantly, for the communities it was designed to support," Dr Wallace said.

The pool was established to reduce insurance premiums for households, small businesses and strata properties in medium-to-high cyclone risk areas by giving insurers access to affordable, government-backed reinsurance. For brokers operating in cyclone-exposed regions, this translates to a more stable and competitive market for clients who might otherwise struggle to find affordable cover.

Dr Wallace also acknowledged the human dimension behind the numbers, noting the importance of supporting displaced and disrupted communities through reliable, timely claims outcomes.

From its first declared event — Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle affecting Norfolk Island in 2023 — the pool has scaled rapidly.

Looking ahead, ARPC says it will focus on operational efficiency, responsive claims handling and mitigation activities aimed at improving the long-term risk profile of properties in cyclone-exposed areas.
