The House Standing Committee on Economics will conduct public hearings in Western Sydney, Hawkesbury, and Central-West NSW from May 7th to May 10th as part of its ongoing Inquiry into insurers' responses to major flood claims in 2022.

Committee Chair Daniel Mulino MP emphasised the importance of gathering firsthand accounts from locals in severely affected regions. He stated that after hearing from regulators, insurance companies, consumer advocacy groups, and legal rights groups, "now we want to hear firsthand from the locals in some of the worst-hit regions."

Recent hearings in south-east Queensland, Lismore NSW, Maribyrnong, and regional Victoria have already provided valuable insights. The upcoming hearings will take place at various locations:

  • Cabonne Community Centre, Molong – May 7th

  • Eugowra Bowling Club, Eugowra – May 8th

  • Richmond Club, Richmond – May 9th

  • Mantra Parramatta, Parramatta – May 10th

Dr. Mulino highlighted the significance of these locations, particularly Molong and Eugowra, which were devastated by unprecedented flash flooding in November 2022. Additionally, the Committee will hear evidence in Richmond from communities along the Hawkesbury-Nepean River, which has been heavily impacted by multiple flood events since 2020.

Affected councils, community organisations, and businesses will have the opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions. Residents interested in sharing their experiences with insurers can register their interest by emailing floodinsurance.reps@aph.gov.au

The Committee is interested in hearing about various issues, including policyholders' experiences, claim resolution timeframes, communication with insurers, and the affordability of premiums. Those wishing to make public statements should email a summary of their experience to the Committee Secretariat.

While accommodation limitations may restrict the number of participants, individuals can still contribute through public or confidential submissions, and an online survey will be available until July 31st.

The Inquiry website will provide programs for the hearings closer to the date, and a live audio stream will be available on the Parliament House website for public access.
