A new insurance brokerage – First Peoples Insurance – has been launched by Indigenous entrepreneur Stuart White, specifically targeting the insurance needs of First Nations communities.

Coinciding with the 2024 NAIDOC Week, First Peoples Insurance will function as an Authorised Representative (AR) of Austbrokers Comsure (AB Comsure) and is completely Indigenous owned and operated.

Stuart White, the founder of the organisation says that the idea for the brokerage emerged when he recognised a gap in the market for services tailored for Indigenous communities.

“Work I’ve done with corporates on Reconciliation Action Plans (RAP) identified a lack of trust among Indigenous people about insurance. They don’t understand it and mob prefer to buy from mob,” he said.

Mr White also aims to provide skills training and jobs for First Nations people. The brokerage is also registered entity with Supply Nation, which is Australia’s leading database of verified Indigenous businesses, with over 4,500 entities.

Managing Director Ian Garbutt said he was proud to welcome First Peoples Insurance into the AB Comsure family.

“AB Comsure prides itself on promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace and supporting the communities in which we work and live. The opportunity to support Stuart in creating a business that focuses on the Indigenous community is a natural progression for us,” he said.

“From my first interaction with Stuart, I was drawn to his passion for his community and his long-term vision to attract young Indigenous people into the insurance industry through his business,” Mr Garbutt said.

Through the support and training provided by AB Comsure, Mr White aims to emulate the success in Australia of a similar capacity compared to what international brokerages have achieved in providing insurance services for the Indigenous communities of the United States and Canada.
