Sam Mostyn AO to become Australia's next Governor-General

Ms Mostyn will become the country's 28th Governor-General, succeeding the Honourable David Hurley later this year. 

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the appointment of Ms Samantha Mostyn AO as the nation's next Governor-General. The appointment follows a distinguished career marked by exceptional service to the Australian community.  

Ms Mostyn, set to succeed the current Governor-General David Hurley AC DSC, will officially assume office as Australia's 28th Governor-General on July 1, 2024. With a background spanning business, governance, and community leadership, she brings a wealth of experience to the role.  

Hailing from a military family, Ms. Mostyn embarked on her professional journey as a lawyer. She served as an associate in the Court of Appeal of the NSW Supreme Court before moving into prominent positions within law firms and later transitioning to executive roles in the telecommunications and insurance sectors, both domestically and internationally.  

Notably, her contributions extend beyond the corporate field. Ms. Mostyn has demonstrated a deep commitment to various philanthropic causes, serving on numerous not-for-profit boards, including Beyond Blue, the Foundation of Young Australians, and Australians Investing in Women. Her advocacy for women's rights and mental health issues has been particularly noteworthy.  

Moreover, Ms Mostyn's involvement in sports administration, notably her leadership in the Australian Football League (AFL) and her pivotal role in establishing the AFL Women's (AFLW) league, underscores her diverse portfolio of achievements.  

Expressing gratitude for Governor-General Hurley's service, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated, "On behalf of the Government and the people of Australia, I thank General Hurley for his service to our country and convey our deep respect for the outstanding way he discharged his duties as Governor-General."
